Before we delve into the connections between The Lovers tarot card and the Gemini zodiac sign, it’s important to understand one thing.

There are no absolute, set-in-stone links between tarot cards and astrological signs. However, we can uncover intriguing symbolic connections, as both these realms are rich with symbolism. Therefore, it’s highly recommended to approach this article with an open mind, recognizing that these connections are not definitive but rather intriguing possibilities.

Let’s get started.

Why The Lovers Card represents Gemini so well

The Lovers tarot card is the 6th card in the Major Arcana. It is a potent symbol of love, as one might expect, but it also encompasses themes of choice and relationships. Geminis, often described as social butterflies, thrive on interaction with others.

Geminis are known for their dual nature, symbolized by the twins, representing two identities and the choices that come with them. This duality is mirrored in The Lovers card, which depicts two people – a man and a woman – and two distinct choices symbolized by a tree with a snake and a tree with flames. Duality is as much a part of this card as it is a part of the Gemini sign.

Moreover, the duality between the woman on the left and the man on the right is emphasized by the fact that they represent Adam and Eve – two halves of a greater whole.

Now, let’s explore two more crucial elements in the card that connect The Lovers to Gemini: the imposing Angel and the cloud. Let’s go!

How Gemini and The Lovers’ angel are symbolically linked

Ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, Gemini embodies the essence of interaction and exchange. Mercury, often referred to as the messenger planet, governs communication, and Gemini rules the third house, which also represents communication.

Thanks to this strong Mercurial influence, most people born under this sign can easily engage in both one-on-one conversations and public speaking, whether at school, work, or other platforms.

Now, what about the Angel in The Lovers card?

This angel is described by Waite as a “great winged figure with arms extended.” It is depicted at the top of the card, imposing and prominent, with red wings in the Rider-Waite deck. The most intriguing part is that this angel is Raphael. He embodies the role of a messenger and communicator who serves as a bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms.

The cloud as a symbol of Air, Gemini’s element

The Angel Raphael is depicted on a flying cloud, which symbolizes the element of air. Gemini is the first air sign of the zodiac and the third sign overall, following Aries, the initiator, and Taurus. What a fitting coincidence!

Regarding air signs: each modality classifies zodiac signs based on their position within a season. There are cardinal signs at the beginning of a season, fixed signs in the middle, and mutable signs at the end. Gemini is a mutable sign, and mutable signs like Gemini are known for being curious, open-minded, intelligent, and adaptable.

The Lovers’ Keywords

As many tarot enthusiasts are aware, each card is accompanied by associated “keywords” – brief phrases or single words that encapsulate its essence. These keywords serve as convenient reference points for grasping the card’s meaning and guiding interpretations.

The tradition of assigning keywords to tarot cards traces back to the 18th century with the Etteilla Tarot. Etteilla, a renowned French occultist, played a pivotal role in popularizing tarot within esoteric circles, as detailed in our article on the History of Tarot.

Now, let’s delve into the specific keywords associated with The Lovers tarot card and examine their connection to Gemini.

Relationships” and “Partnerships” are two upright keywords of the card. Geminis are naturally social and thrive in interactive environments. As previously mentioned, they are social butterflies by nature.

Values alignment” is another keyword of The Lovers, intriguingly linked to Gemini. Geminis are known for their adaptability, intelligence, and (again) social nature. They shape their values through interactions with others. The Lovers card reflects this by emphasizing the significance of finding common ground, echoing Gemini’s ability to harmonize diverse perspectives.

Choices”, another keyword of The Lovers, is closely linked to the twin nature of Gemini. This signifies the presence of multiple perspectives and options, mirroring Gemini’s innate ability to see various sides of an issue. However, this multifaceted view can sometimes make decision-making challenging for Gemini individuals.

When reversed, The Lovers card touches on “Self-love” and “Conflict”, themes that resonate with Geminis. The internal conflict of balancing their dual aspects can lead Geminis on a journey of self-discovery and self-love. The struggle to harmonize their dual nature is a common trait among Geminis, making these keywords particularly relevant.
