Pluto Symbols: Modern ♇ Traditional ⯓
The modern form of Pluto’s glyph is a monogram uniting the letters P and L, the initials of Percival Lowell, the astronomer who predicted Pluto’s existence shortly before its discovery. The traditional symbol, however, is composed of a crescent (consciousness) turned upward, placed above a circle (spirit) and a cross (matter). In this version, one reads the soul rising above spirit and matter, an image of the process of transformation and rebirth. Pluto takes its name from the god of the Underworld, lord of subterranean riches (from the Greek Plouton, “the giver of wealth”). His sickle, the darkness, and the hidden treasures become perfect metaphors for the Plutonian archetype.
In Astrology, Pluto’s glyph represents the force of death and rebirth, radical transformation. The traditional version, with the crescent above the circle and cross, reveals how higher consciousness can emerge through the confrontation with matter and spirit.
Pluto Symbology
Pluto, the most distant and enigmatic planet, with its eccentric orbit and hidden presence, symbolizes the darkness of the unconscious and the depths of the unexplored. It governs transformation, the kind that occurs through death and rebirth, forcing a metamorphosis that is both destructive and regenerative. Pluto embodies catharsis and alchemy, the mystical process of turning one state into another, revealing hidden power through deep internal shifts. It is also the planet of courage and relentless pursuit, willing to descend into the darkest abysses to uncover the truth of existence and the essence of meaning itself.
