The title might seem a bit dramatic, or even clickbaity, but it’s actually a fitting description of what we’re about to explore in this article. We’ll be looking at Neptune’s influence over the past 50 years, starting with its time in Sagittarius during the 1970s. And, from there, we’ll explore how its sign placements have shaped global trends and collective shifts.

Before we dive into the specific sign placements, let’s take a step back and revisit Neptune’s discovery to better understand its significance.

The discovery of Neptune

Neptune’s discovery was a triumph of science, predicted mathematically before it was ever seen. In 1846, French astronomer Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier calculated its position, leading to its confirmation through telescopic observations at the Berlin Observatory on the night of September 23–24. This momentous event not only confirmed Neptune’s existence but also proved Newton’s gravitational theory. As François Arago put it, Le Verrier had discovered a planet “with the point of his pen.”

Before Pluto was discovered, Neptune was regarded as the most distant planet from the Sun. Since its discovery in 1846, Neptune has completed a little more than one full orbit around the Sun.

Neptune was discovered while in the sign of Aquarius, a fitting alignment given that this period was defined by the industrial revolutions, which sparked mass change and technological innovations – traits strongly associated with Aquarius energy. During these years, Neptune’s influence began to shape the collective unconscious, bringing themes of solidarity and empathy to the forefront. This paved the way for wealthier classes to offer aid to the less fortunate.

Neptune transits symbolism expressed through a hexagonal skylight opening to the sky, evoking perspective and collective vision.

Though Neptune is often associated with imagination and dreams, its deeper symbolism encompasses ideals and compassion. Neptune not only draws us into imaginative realms but also helps us understand others. How? By doing what it does best, transporting us into other realities. Through this, Neptune allows us to put ourselves in others’ shoes via imagination. This influence was evident at the end of the 1800s, when Neptune helped the wealthier classes begin to empathize with the conditions of the poor and foster solidarity. (Let’s not delve into the fact that much of this solidarity was sometimes superficial, merely a mask rather than genuine change.)

Neptune’s transits in the last 50 years

Neptune takes approximately 165 years to complete a full cycle through the zodiac, spending just over 14 years in each sign. Let’s take a look at Neptune’s positions in the last few decades, starting with its transit through Sagittarius in 1970.

Neptune in Sagittarius (1970 – 1984)

When you think of the 1970s, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For many, it’s the music – rock music, to be precise. Bold, rebellious, and innovative, it opened new doors in the world of sound. The energy of Sagittarius, the sign of exploration, brought a sense of adventure into music, pushing boundaries like never before. However, the musical revolution of the 70s was also intertwined with the rise of drug culture, which Neptune influences by transporting people into altered states of imagination and dreams, creating a parallel reality.

But the influence of Neptune in Sagittarius doesn’t end there. Neptune’s ability to blur the lines of reality combined with Sagittarius’ love for exploration also contributed to a surge in travel and global commerce during this period.

For example, air travel, which had already been around since the 1950s and 60s, became far more accessible in the 1970s. A significant reduction in flight costs, especially after the U.S. airline deregulation of 1978, allowed more people to take to the skies. This era also saw the rise of low-cost airlines (which, at the time, were not as inexpensive as they are today! In fact, they were quite expensive) like Southwest Airlines, making flying available to a much wider audience.

Neptune in Capricorn (1984 – 1998)

The 1980s and 1990s marked a rapid rise in technology and the growth of major corporations. Neptune in Capricorn, the sign of structure, authority, and material ambition, ushered in an era of institutions, rules, and practical dreams realized in the material world. During this time, career and professional success became central, closely tied to Capricorn’s vision of achievement and ambition. The career path evolved into not just an individual pursuit, but a measure of social value.

Neptune in Capricorn also fueled fantasies of wealth and fame, creating a practical idealism that drove many to chase material success as the pinnacle of achievement. While Neptune often dissolves boundaries and ventures into fantasy, here those dreams were more grounded in tangible goals.

However, the pursuit of power and status revealed the influence of powerful financial forces, often manipulative, shaping the economic and social landscape. The illusions tied to these ideals grew more evident as marketing and media fueled the desire for wealth and success at the expense of deeper values.

Neptune in Capricorn’s influence also marked the expansion of fields like computing and finance on a global scale, creating new work dynamics and opportunities, but also illusions and dependencies tied to money and power. It was the decade of globalization, which, under Capricorn’s influence, became more structured and organized.

Multinational corporations, international policies, and global work practices accelerated the unification of the world market. Capricorn’s focus on stability and long-term planning encouraged a systematic approach to economic relations, often hiding the inequalities created by this globalization.

Neptune in Aquarius (1998 – 2012)

The late ’90s and early 2000s marked the digital revolution, with Neptune in Aquarius, the sign of innovation, freedom, and global connection. This period saw the rise of social networks like Facebook (2004), Twitter (2006), and Instagram (2010), transforming communication and interaction. Aquarius’s influence brought about a new vision of a connected world, where technology promised to break down barriers and improve lives.

Social media, embodying Aquarian ideals of collective socialization and individuality, enabled instant global connections and created virtual communities. However, Neptune also brought illusions, as the promise of a more connected world was often marred by privacy issues, online security concerns, and the manipulative use of information. Despite facilitating rapid communication, social media also led to emotional isolation and tech dependency.

This era also saw the evolution of identity, with technology offering new ways to challenge traditional concepts of gender, race, and culture. Aquarius’s energy encouraged personal authenticity, but it also created a sense of fluidity, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.

Neptune in Pisces (2012 – 2025)

Neptune is at home in Pisces, its natural sign, marking a time of closure and deep transformation. Pisces, as the last sign of the zodiac, symbolizes the end of one cycle and the preparation for a new beginning.

Lately, we’ve been experiencing a sense that the old world order is gradually giving way to something new and unknown. Neptune in Pisces invites us to confront the collective unconscious, close old chapters, and step into a future that’s not yet clearly defined.

This energy is reflected in the social shifts we’re witnessing, such as the erosion of the Capricornian career model and the changing attitudes of new generations. Even social media, born with Neptune in Aquarius, is undergoing a transformation, with an increasing number of people expressing their desire to disconnect or use it in a different way.

During this period, there’s been a surge in spiritual exploration, though it remains a pursuit of a minority. People are seeking to integrate mind, body, and spirit, and practices like yoga, and meditation have gained popularity, offering ways to connect with the unseen forces of the universe.

Even astrology, considered a spiritual practice, has exploded in popularity, becoming more accessible than ever. Perhaps we can thank Neptune in Pisces for its role in bringing astrology into the mainstream!?

The dream of a more unified and spiritual world permeates popular culture, as many search for authentic answers in the face of global chaos. Yet, Neptune’s influence also carries the risk of illusion and self-deception. The desire to escape reality, whether through fantasy or easy solutions that promise salvation, can often lead to disillusionment.

Neptune transits reflected in a soft, abstract close-up of a shoulder and neck, capturing sensitivity and dissolving boundaries.

Neptune in Pisces also coincides with global crises and social uncertainty, prompting many to turn to spirituality as a means of healing and transcendence. This spiritual search offers an alternative to materialism and pure logic, but it’s not without its challenges.

In the social and cultural realm, the rise of fake news and collective delusions has flourished in our increasingly virtual, connected world. The pursuit of truth has become more complex, with the lines between what’s real and what’s constructed growing ever more blurred. And what could better symbolize this confusion than Neptune and Pisces, both associated with illusion and ambiguity?

Neptune in Aries (NOW)

First entry into Aries: 30 March 2025
Retrograde back into Pisces: 22 October 2025
Re-enters Aries to stay: 26 January 2026 → 2039

We’re in the middle of a threshold moment. Neptune crossed into Aries for the first time in March 2025, opening a new fiery chapter, but its retrograde has temporarily pulled it back into the final degrees of Pisces. This in-between space carries the feeling of a tide that has retreated only to gather force before returning with greater intensity.

Aries, ruled by Mars, brings beginnings, urgency, self-assertion, and the raw instinct to pioneer. Introducing Neptune – the planet of dreams, illusions, sacrifice, and collective imagination – into such a fierce landscape creates a transit that feels both energizing and unsettling. It marks the shift from dissolution (Pisces) to ignition (Aries), from surrender to will.

Historically, Neptune in Aries has aligned with periods of uprising, identity revolution, and ideological fire. But rather than compressing everything here, we’ll explore these patterns – and what they may mean for 2026–2039 – in a dedicated article.
